Xtream Codes vs M3U Playlist

The two ways every IPTV subscription connects — explained so you know exactly which one to ask for.

Every IPTV subscription hands you one of two things: a long link called an M3U playlist URL, or a set of three credentials called an Xtream Codes login (username, password, server URL). Both connect the same service to your player — the difference is how information flows, and it quietly decides things like how the programme guide loads and how easily things recover when something changes. Knowing which you have (and which your device likes) makes every setup faster.

What an M3U playlist actually is

An M3U link is a text file served at a URL. When your player opens it, it receives a list: every channel with its direct stream address, every VOD category, and the EPG addresses. The player then manages everything itself.

  • Looks like: http://server:port/get.php?username=xxx&password=yyy&type=m3u_plus
  • Strengths — works in virtually every player ever made, including VLC on a PC; the whole package in one pasted link.
  • Weaknesses — the full channel list is downloaded to the device (large lists take a minute on first load), and if the underlying stream addresses change, the playlist must be reloaded.

What Xtream Codes actually is

Xtream Codes (named after the historical panel software, now often called "Xtream API" or XC) is a live connection instead of a file. Your player logs in with username, password and server URL, and the API serves content dynamically: categories, streams, EPG, VOD and account info (like your subscription expiry date shown inside the app).

  • Looks like: three fields — username, password, server URL like http://server:port/.
  • Strengths — the player queries fresh data instead of a snapshot: EPG tends to stay current, VOD categories update, and the app can show your account status.
  • Weaknesses — a few simple players (notably plain VLC) do not speak the API, and you type three values instead of pasting one.

Which one should YOU use

  • Fire Stick / Android TV (TiviMate, Smarters, XCIPTV) — either works perfectly; take Xtream Codes for the live EPG behaviour if offered.
  • Samsung / LG Smart TV apps — depends on the app: some activation pages accept both, some only M3U. Check the app, then ask for that format.
  • MAG / Formuler boxes — MAG runs the portal system (a third way), Formuler's MyTVOnline accepts all formats.
  • iOS players — GSE and Smarters-family apps handle both; older simple apps are M3U-only.
  • PC with VLC — M3U is the only choice.

Providers like TellyBay issue whichever format fits your device — just say what screen you are setting up, or check the setup guide for your device first.

Security and sharing notes

Treat both formats like a house key: anyone holding your M3U link or Xtream login can stream on your plan. Never post it in forums or screenshots; when asking for help, cover the username and password. If you suspect a leak, ask support to reset your line — a new link/password invalidates the old one instantly. And remember standard plans allow one stream at a time, so a shared link shows up as constant "already connected" conflicts, which is itself a leak symptom.

A short glossary so nothing surprises you

  • M3U / M3U8 — the playlist file format; the "8" variant is the UTF-8 text version. Players call it "Playlist URL".
  • Xtream Codes / XC — the login-and-API system; players call it "Xtream Codes API" or "Add User".
  • EPG — the electronic programme guide (the "what's on" grid).
  • Stalker portal — the third connection style used by MAG boxes; see the MAG box guide.

Xtream Codes vs M3U Playlist — questions

Short, direct answers. Still unsure? Message us on WhatsApp or email contact@tellybay.com.

Neither is universally better. Xtream Codes gives fresher EPG and account info; M3U is the most universally compatible format, including VLC. On modern apps both play the same channels at the same quality.

Not yourself — the two systems come from the provider side. If your player only accepts one format, ask your provider for the other; providers can issue both from the same subscription.

That parameter asks the server for the enriched version of the playlist — it includes EPG mapping and VOD groupings instead of a bare channel list. It is the normal, better variant.

Providers rotate links for security or when your plan renews. Ask support for the current link, then reload the playlist in your player — your favourites usually survive a link refresh.

You can install it on any number of devices, but standard plans stream one screen at a time. For two simultaneous screens, add a second connection to your plan instead of buying a second subscription.
